Your Doula Website is Your Office

self employment office doulas

If you’re a doula, chances are you don’t rent office space where you can meet with clients. While the majority of midwives, and massage therapists, childbirth educators, and prenatal yoga teachers do have spaces they can call their own, or at least share with other practitioners, doulas tend to live in a more fluid work environment.  Instead, we meet potential & existing clients in their homes, or at cafes, libraries,  hospitals, cafes, doctor or midwife offices, and parks.

Your website is your office!

Think about it.  This is often the first place where you meet a potential client. Perhaps they walk in through your home page they found on search, or a blog post a friend shared, or a resource link on their midwife’s website, but once they’ve taken that first step over the threshold, they are now visiting your online home office.

Hopefully… In this office they see a comfortable chair or sofa where they’d enjoy sitting down while you engage in friendly, informative, thoughtful conversation.  They notice a big bookshelf in the corner with all sorts of delicious books they would love to borrow from you.  The flowers on your desk were just picked this morning.  The colors in your office strike just the right tone for their style, warm and nurturing while also bold and modern.  The way you reach out to them, the inspirational birth quote you have stenciled on the wall, the clear options you are offering for their care, all come together to help them feel hopeful, and understood. Everything they are seeing reflects your insight into their needs, and your ability to support them.

And… wow, you just saved a lot of money on rent!  So if your website is your office, then it is more clear than ever to me that you need to invest in your website.

  • You need an online presence that will serve as the perfect introduction to your care, welcoming potential clients and giving them a clear, heartfelt sense of how you will be able to support them.
  • You need to invest in a location families can easily find
  • You need to take care with your office (website) design and decor, offer some warm tea (words of comfort or insight) at just the right time, and help them feel at ease in your care.

I am reminded of the story of what happened when I got my first “real” doula & childbirth education website

So whether you are just beginning to imagine your new website, or you’ve got an existing site that could use some tender loving care, I would love to help you design a virtual office space that will welcome and engage your ideal clients.  Take a look around this website – bit by bit I’m gathering all sorts of great resources to help you make the most of your online presence.  From SEO packages with my SEO partner, to helpful blog posts, and of course custom website packages, I’m here as your website doula (or in this case, interior designer), to help you bring your online office to life.
