SEO for midwives and birth centers: Keywords & 10 strategies to show up in local search

As a midwife or birth center owner, you have a unique challenge when it comes to marketing your services. You have to continually find new families – every single month – to make sure you are at full capacity with your clients year-round.
Strong local SEO for your midwifery practice or birth center is absolutely key to having local families find you online and reach out for care. You need to show up for local searches such as “midwife near me”, and have a robust Google Business Profile with accurate details about your business, regular new five star reviews, and up to date photos (not stock!).
When I design websites or improve SEO specifically for midwives and birth centers, they often come to me with an existing website. Their site may be functional and informative, and perhaps even beautiful, but they are almost always completely missing the midwife SEO factors needed to show up in search results! That means local families can’t always find their services online. That’s where SEO (search engine optimization) and keyword strategy come in.
SEO for midwives: Ten important – and simple – updates to improve your placement in search results:
Here are ten key tips I share with my midwife and birth center clients to help their websites appear in search results—and connect with more families seeking pregnancy and birth care.
1. Lead with your midwife office or birth center location
Most parents want to find a midwife near their home. Without local indicators, Google has no idea of where you are based! Instead of just saying “Compassionate midwifery care”, include your city or region:
“Compassionate midwifery care in Austin, Texas.”
Even just this tiny content update will help Google match your site to local searches. If you serve multiple towns, be sure to also include on the page your service area, including a list of towns in the surrounding region that you also serve.
2. Use the words families use to describe your midwifery care
You might say prenatal care, but your clients might be using terms like “pregnancy care”, “pregnancy checkups” or “prenatal clinic”. I always recommend keeping a running list of phrases you hear in consultations, then weaving them into your site.
Plus, there are so many great variations on the keywords families use to find your midwifery or birth center services.
Are you a home birth midwife? Make sure you use variations including home birth, homebirth, home birth midwife, giving birth at home, natural birth at home.
Certified Nurse Midwife? Licensed Midwife? Certified Professional Midwife? Traditional Midwife? Don’t just include your credentials as letters (LM, CPM, CNM…) – write it out!
Do you have a birth center? You can weave in variations you hear clients are using to find you such as as birthing suites, natural birthing center, birthing center, non-hospital facility for giving birth, home-like birth center, midwifery birth center, family-centered birth center, birth center vs hospital birth or water birth center.
3. Write clear page titles & headlines featuring your midwifery services and location
Google pays close attention to the headers and subheaders on your site. The very top line on your home page and services pages should be a headline that is designated as your H1. If your homepage h1 headline just says “Welcome” or your business name, you’re missing a big opportunity! Ideally that h1 should include your #1 service offering and your location such as:
“Home Birth Midwife Services in Denver”
This gives both clients and search engines instant clarity.
Then, look at subheaders lower down on the page (these are labeled as H2 and H3) and use them to repeat those terms and variations such as “Why choose home birth midwifery care?”, “My Denver Midwife Packages”, or “How much do Denver home birth midwife services cost?”
4. Give each of your midwifery, birth and postpartum services its own page
If you offer water birth, postpartum care, or are also an IBCLC offering lactation support—don’t hide them under one giant “Services” page. A dedicated page for each local midwifery, birth and postpartum related service makes it much easier for Google to show the right page when someone searches.
If you have a birth center, make sure to include a page with all the special features of your birth center such as custom water birth tubs, mood lighting, a waiting room for families, in-house birthing classes and more.

5. Include your midwife or birth center FAQ on your service pages – NOT on a separate page.
Including an FAQ section on your midwife or birth center services pages has all kinds of great benefits for your SEO. While it might make sense to your brain to have a separate FAQ page, Google is looking for these on your actual service pages – and you can even include some on your home page! Here’s why they are so important for your midwife or birth center SEO:
- FAQ questions represent how clients search for your services – People often type their exact questions into Google: “Does insurance cover midwife services?” or “Is water birth at a birthing center safe?” If your FAQ has that wording, your site has a better shot at showing up.
- Google loves structure – FAQs are easy for search engines to read. Sometimes they even get pulled into those little “People also ask” boxes, which puts your site higher on the page without extra effort.
- Trust & clarity – For families, an FAQ reduces hesitation. They get quick answers without needing to call or dig. That ease of access makes them more likely to reach out when they’re ready.
It’s less about stuffing keywords, more about anticipating what’s already in your clients’ heads and answering it directly.
6. Expand your midwife or birth center blog with purpose
The best blog posts are answers to questions you hear all the time from your midwife clients in your prenatal and postpartum visits:
- “What happens at the first prenatal visit?”
- “Is water birth safe?”
- “Can I have a home birth if I am planning a VBAC”?
Each post becomes a doorway for new families to discover your site.
7. Talk about midwife fees & insurance coverage
There are a TON of keywords people are typing in around midwife and birth center fees & insurance. They are looking for details on insurance coverage, verification of benefits, fees, self-pay options, medicaid, Tricare for military families, sliding scale, scholarships, fertility benefit programs such as Carrot Fertility, Maven and Progyny. The list goes on!
Designating an entire page on your site for your packages, fees and insurance coverage details including an ample FAQ section goes a long way to helping your midwife or birth center show up in local search results. Sample questions might include:
- “Do you accept my insurance / is midwifery covered?”
- “What will my out-of-pocket cost be? What parts of midwifery care are not covered by insurance?
- “What if I want a home birth / birth center vs hospital — does insurance cover that differently?”
- “What credentials/licensing does the midwife have, and does that affect coverage?”
- “Do you require prior authorization or referrals? How can I verify my insurance benefits for your care?”
- “What about emergencies / transfers to hospital — is that cost included or separate?”
- “Will newborn be covered on my insurance immediately if my baby is born at home or a birth center?”
- “What are non-medical/extra costs if I am planning a home birth?”
- “Are there payment plans / sliding scale options if insurance doesn’t cover everything?
8. Name your images & add alt text
Google can’t “see” your photos on your midwife or birth center website unless you tell it what’s there.
Your photos should be named by what is happening in the photo using 3-4 words.
EXAMPLE: You have a photo of a birthing person in the tub giving birth at home with you by their side/
The image name could be: midwife-home-water-birth.jpg
The alt text is the hidden description you add to the image such as.
EXAMPLE: The image described above can use alt text such as: “Midwife at a home water birth in Portland Oregon”.
Even making this tiny update can boost your service page’s performance in client searches for home birth midwife or birth center services.
9. Use your Midwife Google Business Profile as a tool to grow your visibility
A Google Business Profile (GBP) is basically your public front door on Google. For a midwife or birth center, it’s one of the easiest ways to be found by the exact people looking for you. Here’s what it can do for you:
When someone types “midwife near me” or “prenatal care [your city]” or “natural birth center” into Google, profiles with complete info pop up first in the local map pack. Even if you don’t have a clinic space with a local address, you can set a service area so you still show up.

Your GBP shows reviews, photos, and hours right on the search results page. Expectant parents can see you’re real, read testimonials, and decide to call you without even visiting your site. You don’t pay for this placement. Your profile can rank higher than websites if it’s active and accurate. Adding posts, photos, and updates keeps it fresh — Google rewards that.
Your profile has call, message, and website buttons. That means fewer clicks between “curious” and “booking a consult.”
Google uses your profile info (business name, category, description) to decide who to show your midwife services or birth center to. Using clear terms like “midwife,” “birthing center” “home birth support,” and “prenatal visits” in your description helps you show up for those searches.

10. Keep your midwife or birth center website fresh with updates & new content
Search engines like to see that your website is active. That means we need to continually update your midwife or birth center website. Updates could include changes to your service pages with current fees and offerings, updates to your midwife bio, posting new keyword-rich blogs, or adding upcoming events. Each of these changes tell both Google AND local families that your birth center or midwifery practice is thriving and active.
