Birth Work meets Search Engine Optimization

I’m setting out to draw a parallel between birth work and good search engine optimization in this post – probably the first time this has ever been attempted. This is inspired by my SEO BIRTH PLAN course, exploring website strategy and search engine optimization for birth & holistic professionals.

Ok, get ready to be impressed by my extraordinary skill in analogy creation...

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the part of cultivating an online presence than makes most of us put our hands over our ears and shout “la-la-la-i-can’t-hear-you!” Instead, we throw a bunch of keywords on the site and hope that will work – something like this:
And then… we wonder why our website isn’t showing up?

Then we get spam emails from random search engine optimization companies from friendly-seeming women like “Melissa”, such as this message I got this morning: “I know your website is important to you…I wanted to show you some businesses, visually, how they compare to the websites on the first page — Truly understand why your competition outranks you on the Search Engines. We have been doing this for years and are great at what we do. We have an extremely knowledgeable staff that sincerely analyze your site.”

So yes, my website is important to me. It is absolutely vital to the success of my business. I also know that a quick fix SEO isn’t going to cut it.

In birth work, we talk a lot about values such as patience and allowing time for birth to unfold. We lay a strong foundation with good nutrition, excellent prenatal care, and support from a birth team we trust. Good SEO works the same way – we nourish our website / blog / social media presence with quality information, we tend it on a regular basis with fresh new content, and we build a community of good people around us to help support our site. No quick fixes, no random keyword lists. This is organic SEO – building our website content to perfectly match the needs of the families we want to serve, and structuring it in a way that the search engines can readily tell that we are offering quality content to those searching for our services.
