The path to becoming a doula
The path to becoming a doula
One of the things I love about working with birth and postpartum professionals as a web designer is hearing how each of you came to this path. Perhaps it was your own birth experience, supporting a friend in birth, reading Ina May Gaskin, or a purely chance encounter that lead you down this path. It is not easy to step out of the medical paradigm of birth that surrounds us, and the call to each of us to be leaders in changing our birth culture is indeed a powerful one – allowing us to step beyond all that we thought to be true about birth, and begin again…
What’s your story? What allowed you to step into a role of leadership in your community? Yes, leadership. By serving birthing families each and every one of you is leading the way to the transformation of our birth culture, one contraction at a time… Don’t think of yourself that way? Think again – birth work is generally not one of those professions such as teacher or firefighter that we dream of becoming as children. What life steps unfolded to allow you to enter this path?
Here’s my story:
At age 22, way back in 1992 I chanced upon a year-long volunteer position at a housing shelter for refugee pregnant women in Washington, DC. I didn’t know a thing about birth or babies and had to learn as I went. I was blessed with the opportunity to attend the birth of one of these women as a Spanish translator (learning the doula role as I went…), and got hooked on birth work. Over the 20+ years that followed I supported many hundreds of families as a childbirth educator, nurse, doula & translator, and even student midwife (click here to learn why I”m not a midwife today)!
Today I’m still on this path, but in a new way – supporting all of you as The Website Doula. I see web design as a creative way I can contribute to changing our birth culture, one professional at a time. By helping you all serve more families in your local communities, I am sharing my gifts in the best way possible! > Learn more about my background and approach…
